What if Snow White were the real villain and the "wicked queen" just a sadly maligned innocent? What if awakening Sleeping Beauty would be the mistake of a lifetime -- of several lifetimes? What if the famous folk tales were retold with an eye to more horrific possibilities?  Only Tanith Lee -- "Goddess-Empress of the Hot Read" (Village Voice) could retell the world-famous tales of the Brothers Grimm (and others) as they might have been told by the Sisters Grimmer! This special edition, put together for the 30th anniversary of the original edition, adds a new Grimmer fairy tale written especially for this volume!

Steps for improving your life:

1. Buy this book, in any format, though I have to say the Kindle format is excellent. (I have the original edition, and I just bought both the physical copy of the re-issue, for its extra story, and the Kindle edition, so that I can always have these stories with me.)
2. Read “Beauty,” which was originally the last story in the collection, but is now the second-to-last with the inclusion of “The Waters of Sorrow.”
3. Be moved, thrilled, changed, etc.
4. Thank me personally.
5. Read the rest of the stories.
6. Be moved, thrilled, changed, etc. again.

I know I’m not the only person who was just floored by "Beauty." I hear other people get all weird about it all the time. It’s just a thing. The rest of the stories are pretty brilliant in and of themselves, but "Beauty" just has that strange something that will change your perspective on the short story as a format, and on the original fairy-tale "Beauty and the Beast" itself. It’s a bit like Angela Carter’s "The Tiger's Bride" in that regard, but I think, even better.

Red as Blood or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer Expanded Edition eBook Tanith Lee Reviews

As always, Tanith Lee delivers an awesome book. The stories are turned on their heads, sometimes unexpectedly even as you expect it. Completely recommended. Everything by her is recommended.
Of course Snow White had to be a vampire. All the old familiar tales as they might have been, before being made "safe for children". Eat your heart out Disney (I really do like "Once Upon a Time" on TV, but Tannith Lee did it first)
I have been a huge fan of Tanith Lee for many years, and had tried in vain a number of times to find this book. So glad they re-released it! Her style of writing is so unique and her characters just a step off (in a good way). These are grown-up fairy tales that will not disappoint.
Often complex, always compelling, the tales within this book carry enough of the familiar to carry off any reader into the world of Tanith Lee's robust imagination. Other-worldly and intense, the characters often seem driven by compulsion more than by reason to seal off their fates, in surprising ways. Lovers of fantasy or horror won't be disappointed by Red as Blood.
This is one of my all-time favorite books. I find the retelling of the old fairy tales fascinating; a little creepy, a little sad sometimes, but gripping. I bought the edition because I passed on my old paperback copy to my son because he asked for it. This book loving mom was proud.
I love this book so very much. The first time I read Red as Blood I remember being sad when I finished it because of how much I enjoyed the stories. Each story in this anthology is very unique and beautifully dark. Over the years I have read many books but not many have stuck with me like Red as Blood. While they are all wonderful stories my favorite story is Beauty. Tanith Lee takes the classic fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast and turns into such compelling story that the magic of the story will stay with you forever. This is such a fantastic book for those who enjoy dark fairy tales!
Read this book! I used to have the entire collection of Tanith Lee books, including this relatively early one, and let me tell you, she's the best author EVER. No one HAS ever, or WILL ever, retell these old tales the way she does. She understands the early pre-Christian religious matrix these tales came out of, and her elegant re-tales contain much knowledge, for those with ears to hear, and eyes to see. Add to the mix her own idiosyncratic use of language, and her very own sort of science fiction and fantasy elements, which come from nowhere but her own inventive mind, and you will never forget these once you read them. I didn't, so when I realized I had lost this book, I didn't hesitate to re-buy this new version. I can't wait to read it again--there seems to be a new story at the end, too! Yay!
