Interesting stories about whale hunting in the 1800s. Detailed accounts of exactly what was involved in the whole process. Worth reading.
I found Frank Bullen’s first-hand account of his experience as crew member on the Cachalot entertaining, and enlightening. Mr. Bullen captured what life was like sailing aboard a whaling ship in the late 1800’s.
An excellent historical read of life at sea. Well written for the time, puts one at sea on a whaling ship reliving the experiences of days long past.
Forget Moby Dick. This is THE book to read if you've ever been interested in how whaling was done. Written over one hundred years ago, but very readable. My only complaint was that it wasn't long enough. Best of all, I got it free from the library. How flipping great is the !
It is longer than it really needs to be. I do like the parts of the books that cover the daily lives of the crew and leaders. The first captain was a very hard man. Life was tough and some times cruel on a whaling ship.
For someone like me who has a lifelong love of old sailing ship lore and the ways of the mariners this book is a great read. Although cocused pn whaling There is also included a wealth of biological knowledge of the species encountered and a list of ports and whaling areas that I did not know existed. Actually I am very suprised that this book is not better known.
Bullen knows more about the actual life aboard a whaler than Melville. Bullen writes about his 3 year voyage while Melville’s tenure was only 18 months and he then jumped ship. The day in, day out routine, bad captains, bad food and dangers are on every page.
