INTRODUCTION

We’ve all seen the pictures white sand beaches, blue - green waters, palm trees gently swaying in the tropical breeze. For many people around the world the scene represents an earthly paradise. Dreams are born on these sandy beaches. Many long for a simpler life in a tropical climate without the noise and pressures of modern society.
In 1997 a middle-aged Colorado couple with successful careers decided to do more than simply dream about it. They purchased a chunk of property in a remote tropical peninsula in an area that lacked even basic services. The narrow finger of land was connected to the mainland by just one tiny mud road that was more of a four-wheel drive path than an actual road. No electricity, phones, or internet. Just the Caribbean Sea on three sides and that one tiny land connection that you could throw a rock across.
There were only half a dozen homes in the seven-mile section where their land was located. And three of those were not full-time residents. They were simply Spartan vacation camps. There was a small village at the tip of the peninsula with one tiny grocery store, one fuel station, and one hardware shed with a few basic construction materials. It was basically just an old fishing village with small wooden houses on stilts. The entire peninsula was only nineteen miles long and the village sat at the end of it. The only way to get there was by boat or along the mud path when the path was not underwater. It was not easily accessible.
Five years later, in August 2003, the Colorado couple left everything behind and moved full-time into their new little home on the remote little peninsula on the Caribbean Sea. The great experiment had begun. This is their story.
