This was a pretty fantastic book. At first, it took me a little while to get into it. I really hated Elara's foster parents. I also wasn't too sure on how I felt about her friend, Cordon. He seemed as if he was hiding something from Elara from the start, and that feeling turned into a truth later on. Also, Elara is trying to find out the truth about herself and who her parents are, since she was abandoned as an infant. She later find out the truth behind everything, or at least what she believes to be the truth.

I really liked the POV from both Elara and Wilha. You get to see into both of their worlds and see what each one is going through and feeling. I really can't wait to read the second book. I had to make sure that I ordered it right away.

My daughter and I are fans of Jenny's book and we have enjoyed them all ... my daughter started her series in 4th grade and continues to enjoy her books. I highly recommend you check out all of the books. Great quick and exciting reads ... your daughter will love them.
Although I found the plot somewhat predictable, the story kept me turning pages and I finished it in 1-2 days. Some of the decisions the characters made didn't jive well with their established personalities (the princess basically running away, for example), but it didn't bother me enough to take away from my enjoyment of the story, and I look forward to reading the sequel.
This book has all the elements for a wonderful reading experience. It's a story that is fun, fascinating, and easy to picture in your mind. The writer is descriptive without being tedious, and adds just the right amount of conversation. It's easy to get involved with the characters because they're very likable which is an important element for me.
Just like The Birthstone books by Melanie Atkinson, (Sea dweller and Heiress) I would love to see this book made into a movie.
Jenny Lundquist does an amazing job with The Princess in the Opal Mask. This story is so beautifully written in such a rich way that it nearly feels like a fairy tale! The story feels like a retelling of the Prince and the Pauper although this Pauper has a birthright that seems all that glitters but turns out to be not all it may seem. The characters are delectible and I really could not get enough. This coming of age story really does a wonderful job in showing the brutalities that even the most privilaged life can sometimes bring. This story tackles issues of identity, family, magic and romance. I cannot wait for book #2!
I know that it looks like I have a lot of five star books on my list of reviews (I simply don't rate anything I really dislike) and it would seem I hand out five stars without thought. . . really, I don't, but if any book deserves that and more, this is it. I would give The Princess in the Opal Mask and its sequel The Opal Crown more stars if I could. First of all, this is a very clean read. There's nothing in the book that I found questionable or inappropriate for younger audiences but still, as an adult reader, it held my attention every moment. I'll be passing the books on to my ten year old as well.
Secondly, the books are incredibly well written. The writing is flawless, the pacing excellent, and the characters are well rounded. Their weaknesses and strengths naturally unfold with the story and the reader finds him/herself completely engaged and deeply invested in their lives. I immediately cared about them and everything that happened to them. It's been a long time since I cared so deeply about characters in a book and it felt good to be so completely pulled into a story.
What I loved most about this book, however, is that the story stayed with me. I thought about the world Jenny Lundquist created long after I left it-- I missed the main characters and couldn't wait to dive into the second book. Then, once I finished the second book, I was blown away once more (which I'll cover in my review of The Opal Crown) by the depth and emotion of this story.
I went into this story looking for a fun, clean YA fantasy and I came out so grateful for writers like Ms. Lundquist. She not only created a tale rich in imagery, character and world building, and emotion, but the story leaves the reader thinking about the importance of choices and the ripple affect our decisions have on those around us, the value of family and loyalty, the importance of honesty and the courage it takes to be honest even when you fear what may come from it, and so very much more.
Thank you, so much, Ms. Lundquist. In reference to your last comment in The Opal Crown's acknowledgments, I have to say you absolutely did the story justice in every possible way. I'll be recommending this book and it's sequel to everyone I know.
